What's a dental implant?
A dental implant is a metal post that's surgically placed into your jawbone to simulate a tooth root.  This post is typically made of titanium and is the support structure for an artificial tooth.  The artificial tooth attached to your implant post can be permanent or removable, but permanent teeth feel more natural, offer increased stability, and provide stronger biting force.
Implants have several uses such as replacing a single tooth or to support a permanent bridge-set of replacement teeth.  They can also be used to permanently affix full bridges or dentures in your mouth.

Are there advantages to dental implants?
Dental implants have several advantages over conventional bridges and dentures.  Because conventional bridges and dentures are attached to teeth and not bone, they can be unstable, making it difficult to eat or smile with confidence.  Implants are also better for your long-term dental health.  Unlike conventional bridges and dentures that use neighboring teeth for support, implants don't compromise the health of your natural teeth.  Other advantages of dental implants are durability  and ease of care.  Implants can last a lifetime and require the same daily brushing, flossing, and regular checkups as your natural teeth.

What can I expect when getting a dental implant?
Dental implants take multiple appointments over several months.  During your consultation and evaluation, Dr. Martinez and his staff take impressions to create an accurate study model of your mouth.  State-of-the-art computer software helps Dr. Martinez and his team prepare for your dental implants and ensures ideal results. Sometimes additional treatments are needed to place implants, including:
-Sinus lift augmentation: to restore the sinus cavity
-Implant site development: tooth removal and bone grafting
-Autogenous bone grafting: to create sufficient bone quantity for the implant

After your dental implant restoration is complete, it's essential to keep the area clean and infection-free.  Dental implants can accumulate plaque and tartar just as teeth can; regular professional cleanings are necessary to keep your implants healthy.
